We all need good discount outdoor gear ready for the next season of walking, but the things you find out about people when searching for it. I wouldn’t have put comedian Ed Byrne down as someone who enjoys getting out and about in the hills, but a recent article in the papers reveals he has a secret ambition to climb every Munro.

For those not in the know a Munro is any peak in Scotland which is over 3,000ft. They were first listed by Sir Hugh Munro in the 19th century. Some of them have two or even three summits which are known as tops. All together there are 282 Munros and 227 further tops.

He began his quest by climbing Carn Dearg five years ago and has since climbed a total of 75, but his love of hill walking actually comes from joining a school club at the ripe old age of 13 back in Dublin. This led to him conquering Mweelrea, the smooth bald hill, which is the highest point in Mayo.

He sees the walking as appealing to him as it gives him the chance to experience of being alone in wide open paces, the total opposite of his working life as a stand-up comedian – being in small venues in the dead of night. The sport of Munro bagging as he calls it is something he can enjoy as not being a natural sportsman it is something he can participate in and enjoy at his own level and pace.

He even keeps a wallchart which lists those he has climbed and so has become a bit of a passion for him. He sees it a challenge he can complete in the next ten years, at least that is the target. Well I’m sure we wish him well and no doubt the challenge will provide him with plenty of material he can use in his act. In fat why doesn’t he do a gig on a Munro, now’s there’s an idea for him for the next Red Nose Day or Comic Relief.

Whatever type of walking you get into, whether it is for taking to the wilds of Scotland, or enjoying something nearer to home to walk off that Christmas excess, here at Outdoor Look you can be sure to find the best discount outdoor gear around, and you never know who you will meet when you get out there.
