During winter, children need extra care and protection as their tolerance to cold weather is lower than yours. When it’s cold outside, it does not mean that they have to stay indoors. Make them wear warm winter clothes to keep them protected against the winter chill when going out. Here are some tips to dress up your child in a proper way during the winter months.

  1. Begin with Base Layers

A base layer is a primary piece of clothing that touches the skin of your child. This thermal layer helps trap the bodies heat to keep your child warm and cosy for longer. If you get a premium quality base layer, there is less requirement of the top layers of clothes. Both top and bottom base layers are necessary.

If you’re not sure which base layers will be good for your child, look for the one designed from merino wool. It will provide warmth without overheating. With an excellent moisture wicking ability, it keeps your child dry.

  1. Regular Clothes

Your child may be heading out to school or walking to his or her friend’s house through unexpected snowfall, you’ve to ensure their protection. So, make them wear regular clothes on top of the base layers.

Avoid heavy clothing layers like jeans when it’s wet or during snowfall as when they get wet, they dry slowly. Wet clothes let out body’s heat, increasing the risk of hypothermia.

  1. Mid Layers

Any clothing between the outer and base layers is a mid-layer. You can call the normal clothes as mid layers, but here we’re are talking about those layers that deliver extra warmth and insulation such as fleece clothes.

The micro-fleece layer is one of the best mid layers. If you compare it with a fleece jacket, you’ll find it more comfortable and less bulky. They look similar to a regular pullover, which can be layered with other mid layers like a vest. For additional comfort, you can get a zippered upper base layer as in case your child feels hot, he/she can pull off the zip instead of taking off the upper layers.

Another type of mid layer is a Softshell Jacket. You can make your child wear it as a jacket or can wear it under an outer layer when the temperature goes down.

When the temperature is mildly cold or dry such as in spring and autumn, you can wear mid-layers as outer layers also.

  1. Outer Layers

Outer layers include jackets and coats. If it’s not too cold outside, but just wet, make them wear a thinner rain jacket instead of a thicker one as it will be more comfortable. Also, get them a pair of waterproof trousers to keep the bottom layers dry. Block out cold wind with an outer layer having an insulated lining.

Dress your child in this manner to prevent the risk of hypothermia and keep them warm.
