OK so its not quite Shakespeare but it is a simple question, isn’t it? Boots are more stable as they support your ankle and so stop you going over on them, case closed.

Actually, it’s not so straightforward. In order to stop you going over, a boot would have to be so rigid it would be like wearing splints to keep your ankles in place. However, there is a type of boot that does this; unfortunately for walking they are called ski boots so not going to be particularly practical for climbing hills.

At the end of the day it all depends on what you need the footwear for, and your own personal preferences. However, here are some points to consider.

Boots

1. People look at boots and as a rule there appearance is more solid and they have a stiffer sole, and the feel of the boot over the ankle area is reassuring, however it won’t physically prevent you from turning your ankle (Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt!!)

2. Boots do protect the ankle from abrasions and they tend to keep loose gravel out more effectively by being higher.

3. Boots are heavier, and hotter as they cover more skin.

4. They do restrict the ankle flexing which can make it harder to move easily on uneven ground

Shoes

1. A well designed shoe is just as stable as a boot

2. They are lighter and because the ankle is not restricted it’s easier to place your foot precisely – looking at it shoes can actively encourage you to walk properly.

3. With less of the foot covered the foot does not get as hot, making for better heat loss in summer. However, you do have to put up with the odd bit of gravel getting in, but that’s life, a case of what you gain on the swings, you lose on the round-a-bouts as my granddad always told me.

As someone who has always used boots, simply because that was all there was when I started walking (back when Adam was a lad); I might treat myself to a pair of shoes for the summer and see what happens, especially with the offers on at present such as the Regatta Cambrian Breathable Lightweight All Purpose Walking Shoe amongst others.
