Walking in the snow is difficult, so here are a few top tips to help you avoid any embarrassing falls!

Take your time! Snow can be difficult to walk on at the best of times, especially if it is deep! If you try to walk quickly or run, you’re quite likely to end up in the snow itself!

Give yourself a little more balance by holding the top of your poles in one hand and by squeezing the skis together in your other and you can use them to pull yourself forward as well as helping you to remain upright if you do slip.

If you don’t have skis, pack a ski axe! Hold onto the head with the pick pointing backwards in the uphill hand so that you can create a small path for yourself. The pick is held backwards so that if you do start to slide, you can hold it against your chest to prevent yourself from sliding further.

When you find a slope, the easiest way to walk uphill is to kick the front of your boots into the snow where you will get a lot more grip. If you’re going downhill, you can do the opposite to walking uphill, kicking your heel into the snow instead of the front. You can also try digging the front edge of your foot to dig a hole in the snow for you to step into.
