Yoga is very beneficial for anyone. It helps in improving flexibility, building your core strength, making a better body image, and reducing stress. However, even with the benefits it offers, many people are apprehensive about attempting or attending their first yoga class. In this article, I would like to present you with some tips on how you can prepare for your first yoga class.

Signing Up for the Right Class

Yoga has various approaches and styles. Hence, choosing the right kind of yoga is very important for you else, you will face a difficult time. When I enrolled myself in my first yoga class, I went for the Power Flow Yoga 2, thinking it will go well with my gym workout. I had never attempted this kind of yoga, or any sort of yoga, for that matter. The Power Flow Yoga was a quick, one breath per pose kind of yoga, which I struggled doing throughout the class.

Therefore, do your research well before taking your first yoga class and make sure it’s a beginner’s level class if you are new to yoga.

Ahead of Time

Usually, yoga classes fill up quickly and hence, reaching ahead of the class timings and securing a good spot will prove advantageous for you. Arriving early for class also lets you mark your area and leave sufficient space between you and the next person, thereby allowing free flow of movement.

Gathering the Correct Fit

What you wear while doing yoga matters a lot. Wearing a loose T-shirt or a baggy outfit has more chances of revealing your body than you might be comfortable with. Especially in inverted positions, the T-shirt would be on your face, which will cause difficulties while performing the asanas. Thus, wear apparel which is fitting enough and stays in place but at the same time is stretchy and loose enough to not restrict your movement. Some examples of such clothing are- tank tops, full-length athletic leggings, etc.

The Equipment You Need

In yoga, you need a basic set of equipment. Firstly, you need a yoga mat where you can practice your yoga. Secondly, you would need a strap, a yoga mat bag, and a water bottle. Although most institutions and gyms provide you with yoga mats and blocks, it is always helpful and hygienic to have your own gear. This also gives you the choice to practice yoga at home whenever you like.

Ask When in Doubt

Instructors are always willing to help and guide you, so don’t hesitate to ask questions if you feel stuck. They mostly come by and correct your postures if there is any correction required. But other than that, communicating with them will help you get familiar and comfortable with the surroundings as well.

Relax

You are taking up a yoga class to relax and release your stress. So, try not to get anxious or worked up thinking about how the class is going to be. Avoid comparing yourself with others and just focus on yourself. Keep breathing during the class and ease yourself whenever you feel tension building up inside you.  Follow these basic things and you will feel relaxed and overjoyed by the end of it.
