The kinder scout is the highest point in the Peak District. The Kinder Scout features challenging as well as easy routes that cater to the adventure needs of hikers with different levels of experience. Kinder scout boasts unique moorland, a waterfall and unforgettable views. There are 4 to 5 walking routes to the kinder Scout. Each route has its own set of difficulties. The path is boggy and you will need water protection gear and an extra pair of socks to manage the wet weather on the way. In the following section, we will get into the details of one such walking route to the peak.

The Walking Route to Kinder Scout

The route starts to take shape once you get past the Old Nags Head. You must follow Mary’s Lane till the point you notice a signboard near the wooden clough. Once you cross it, you will notice a well-defined path following the clough. The trail is a 3 km steep stretch that goes to the top of the plateau. The trail becomes rockier and tougher as you progress along the way. If you keep to the left side of the path near the Grindsbrook Clough then you will find the flagstone path. It is located across the plateau leading to the Kinder downfall and offers mesmerizing views. Apart from magnificent views, you will also find the path intercepting with the Penine Way. The intercept offers spectacular views of Hayfield, Glossop and the Kinder Reservoir. After covering almost 3.3 km you will get to a point named Kinder Low Trig which marks the start of the descent to the Edale. A Penine Way signboard will see you through the farms in the Upper Booth through a grazing land beneath Kinder Escarpment. This flagstone path can be easily followed and has signpost to guide you towards Old Nags Head.

Highlights of the Route

Kinder Reservoir

The Kinder Reservoir is located in a picturesque region near Kinder Scout. The reservoir covers an area of 44 acres and used to be one of the largest dams in the world. The Kinder River flows into the reservoir after coming down from the Kinder plateau. The area around the reservoir is perfect for walking as it has many trails that head towards Kinder Scout. The trails are of varied difficulty levels. The path at William Clough (near the reservoir) goes through a medieval settlement which is a perfect spot for an overnight stay or lunch.

Kinder Downfall

The Kinder downfall is a beautiful waterfall on the Kinder river. The waterfall is 30m high and plummets down from the Gritstone Cliffs. The best time to visit the waterfall is spring or winters as this is the time when the waterfall is fed by rainwater and has a strong gushing flow. The spray from the fall makes up for an impressive sight for photography. The cloud formed by water droplets is visible from miles away and looks magnificent.

The Kinder Scout could be a challenging trek but it is mostly manageable by fit walkers. You must pack some wet weather protection gears before heading out as this area has boggy trails and wet weather throughout the year.
