What’s that I hear you say a piece of gear for outdoors you cannot supply? What is happening? Well this particular item is very specialized and will allow you to preview areas of The Peak District that are less accessible. Yes Google Street View is set to hit the national Park with Google Trekker, which is basically a rucksack version of the 360 degree camera that was seen all over the UK mounted on a car.

Rangers are currently undergoing training in the use of the camera, which weighs in at a hefty 42.5lb (19.1kg) and is four foot tall. The camera itself takes 360 degree images every 2.5 seconds.

One of the early trails to be captures will be the Tissington Trail, which will become the first UK bridleway to be added, allowing you to follow the whole trail, including every lump, bump plant and building can be viewed from the comfort of your home. Other routes to be covered first are the Monsal and Thornhill trails. As more inaccessible areas are covered, then it will allow those live further away to preview the areas and get a real idea of the scenery on offer. More isolated areas such as Stanage Edge and the Derwent Valley are set to follow. It is hoped that seeing what is on offer will make a difference to those people who actually hit the trails.

They will join other iconic sites around the world that have been captured in the same way, such as Ankor Wat in Cambodia, and The Grand Canyon in USA. Not a bad list to join then.

The Chief Executive of The National Park, Jim Dixon said, “I am thrilled to know we are the first UK national park to get the Trekker backpack. It is amazing to think that thanks to technology that many more people will be able to enjoy the outstanding natural beauty of the Peak District. The Trekker will help bring the Peak District to life online and hopefully inspire families to come and enjoy a walk or a cycle ride in the most beautiful landscapes.”

So a great chance to look at what the Park has to offer, but you will still your gear for outdoors if you venture out for real, so check out the latest additions on the website and see what bargains are to be had.
