Fed up with normal marathons and want something more, well here’s a one day event to test you and your outdoors clothing to the, a 48 mile route across The Lake District from Calbeck in the north to Cartmel at the bottom, via the Helvellyn ridge and the western shore of Windermere. A spectacular route but you maybe won’t have time to enjoy the views.

This amazing challenge is set to take place on 11th October this year and takes in over 4000m of ascent, enough to test out the hardiest pair of knees. The linear route has caused some problems for the organizers but the course organizer is James Thurlow, who is well qualified as he lives in the Lake District and has a recognized passion for running over all terrains. He thinks that the route is “spectacular and a true adventure. It really is a journey that takes in the Lakeland High Road – racers love the feeling that they’re making a journey” and who am I to argue with him.

Once the race begins all competitors will have to self navigate and carry their own food and gear, although there will also be three very well stocked feed stations along the way offering both savory and sweet treats to help keep them going.

In addition a list of mandatory kit has been issued for potential competitors to put together, and this will be the same regardless of the weather on the day, so those turning up on the start line in running vest, shorts and trainers won’t get any further. We all appreciate how quickly the weather can change, especially when out on the fells and the following list is a minimum, and you would probably need more:

Waterproof jacket – not a bin bag or fashion item. This needs to have a waterproof membrane and taped seams

Waterproof trousers – to a similar standard as jacket

Insulated layer – fleece or lightweight duvet jacket

Long sleeve top

Hat and gloves

Map (supplied by race organizers)

Compass

Torch and spare batteries

Mobile phone – fully charged

Whistle
