Singles Awareness Day is celebrated a growing group of people who have decided to rebel against the commercialism of February 14th and the smugness of loved-up couples. Singles who celebrate S.A.D., do so for several reasons and can decide to celebrate on the 13th or 15th of February just so they avoid the couples out on the 14th.

Some even go as far as to leave the country and experience something else entirely; a favourite being the Rio Carnival as Brazil doesn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day until June. Extreme, but what a way to celebrate!!

Others see it as a chance to do more common activities organised around being single, so volunteering and getting outdoors are popular or complete pampering days at a spa are growing in popularity too. So a chance to put ourselves first, or to do something for others, or something in between, the world has plenty to offer.

Green is seen as the colour of choice to celebrate the day, as it is considered the opposite of red, (Robin Hood can’t be wrong), although another choice is black as this is seen as being the absence of colour showing an absence of celebration.

Alternatively you can celebrate Quirkyalone Day, which also takes place on February 14th . The term coming from someone who enjoys being single, and prefers it to dating just for the sake of it (Sign me up). There is even an award ceremony called, surprisingly enough, “The Quirkys” which sees singledom celebrated in the media.

However in South Korea Black Day is a chance to celebrate their singledom by gathering together to eat noodles with black bean sauce, a simple dish called jajanamyeon. This takes place on April 14th, following Valentine’s Day and White Day (March 14th), the two days where gifts showing love can be sent and received.

So let’s grab a men’s hooded sweatshirt, or ladies for that matter, of whatever colour, give those boots an airing and get out there and enjoy our singledom, instead of grabbing a DVD and a pizza and hibernating for the day.
