The use of bicycles has grown in leaps and bounds. People use bicycles to commute as it is convenient, cheap, and environmentally-friendly.  With an upsurge in the number of people using bicycles, the amount of injuries sustained while riding bikes have also risen drastically. In order to avoid injuries, it is advisable that you take a few precautions to avoid a road mishap while riding a bicycle.

Safety Gear is a Must

Wearing safety equipment like a helmet, proper shoes, knee guards, etc. would help you protect yourself in case an accident occurs. Wearing adequate protective gear can, to quite an extent, minimize injury. Whether it’s day or night, it is recommended that cyclists wear bright clothes that are bright and visible. While riding at night make sure there are lights at the front as well as back so people can see you clearly.

Traffic Rules Are to be Obeyed

It is always good to know the traffic rules that are applicable in the area. You can start by understanding the highway code. It goes without saying that traffic signs and signals are to be obeyed. You can signal using your hand to inform other riders while changing lanes. If you come across areas that are prone to accidents (junctions), be very careful and ride with caution. Obey the light signals and don’t jump the red lights.  Responsible riding helps create a healthy and safe environment for everybody. Breaking traffic rules and regulations can be dangerous not just for you but for everybody around you as well.

Defensive Cycling Works Best

Defensive cycling requires the rider to be aware of the surroundings. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst should be a cyclist’s mantra. You can start by choosing the right bicycle for yourself. An ideal bicycle is the one that is best suited to cater to all your needs.  Also, you need to make sure that the handlebars, reflectors, lights, and all other equipment are in working condition.

Always keep an eye on what’s lying in front and what’s at the back. Beware of the hurdles such as speed breakers, potholes, drainage pipes, etc. The railway tracks and crossings are to be kept in mind as well. Be careful while going past the railway crossings. Keep an eye on the road to avoid punctures. Also, it’d be better if you don’t use your earphones while riding. Maintaining eye contact with other riders helps them stay aware about your presence.

Also, maintaining a distance of approximately a metre from the kerb, makes it easier for others to look at you clearly while you’re riding. Avoid things that distract you and concentrate on riding. Enjoy the riding exercise. It is a great way to spend the weekends. Not only is it exciting, but also helps you stay fit and healthy.
