Cairns Australia stunning location for beaches and access to the Great Barrier Reef, but travel just 14 miles south following the Bruce Highway and you reach the small town of Gordonvale where you will find Walsh’s Pyramid. A real pyramid that will test any hiker.

Walsh’s Pyramid look as if it is has been man-made and has simply been covered with trees. However, this is actually the highest freestanding natural pyramid in the world. At 3,024ft (922metres for you modern folk) it is primarily used for hiking. Being a little on the steep side, to say the least, you do need to take your time. It can take three hours to reach the summit and get back down, but if you are taking children, or if you are a little out of practice then allow for a longer trek.

The ascent is a constant climb with no real flat areas to get your breath back. Rocks feature heavily, so be sure to wear the right footwear, especially if there has been rain as it could be slippy. The rest of the vegetation is typical Australian scrub, so is quite open. Therefore, remember to apply sunscreen and have plenty of water available. However the scenery that you experience from the summit is simply amazing with 360 degree views of the surrounding areas, the view will make the effort of the climb worth every step.

If you are feeling super fit then you can join in with the rest of the “fools” who participate in the annual Pyramid Race. This takes place in August each year as part of the local County Fair, although there is normally a cash prize for the winner.

So however you tackle this particular peak make sure you enjoy a few beers, sorry “tinnies” and a long sit down somewhere in the shade when you get back safely, trust me you will need them.
