We often give you ideas on walks in the hills and amazing natural views to experience, from Land’s End to John O’Groats but this great land also offers some great urban area that are particularly pedestrian friendly. A chance to still experience some great walking but in a different way than ticking off another munro, or wainright from your wishlist. Here is a shortlist I have come up with, in no particular order. Let me know if you have a favourite that I haven’t mentioned.

Oxford: Walk around almost any corner in the second-oldest University City in the world and you can imagine yourself in virtually any era of the past one thousand years. Here you can find virtually every style of English architecture lying side by side, with great colleges and tiny alleys to explore, who knows where or when you will end up.

Durham: Home to a UNESCO World Heritage castle and cathedral that remain the best examples of Norman architecture. You can walk the town area visiting over two dozen Grade I and II landmarks within one conservation area.

York: York Minister, or The Metropolitical Church of St Peter, is one of the most iconic buildings in the country, and is able supported by a mass of city walls, a castle and quaint cobblestoned mediaeval streets which are a Shambles in name only.

Bath: From the Royal Crescent to the Roman Baths, this gem of Somerset is set amongst hills that will make you think you are walking through a Jane Austen novel, so its clear why these has been a fashionable location for royalty as the spa town to visit for the last three hundred years.

Cambridge: Another University location, that has had much of its central area made pedestrian only. The Bridge of Sighs, yes there is one here, is one to see as well as college building s and The Fitzwilliam Museum.

Edinburgh: Scotland’s Capital with its Old and New Town is a masterpiece of urban architecture that over one million visitors a year admire while walking. From the castle to St Giles’ Cathedral there is plenty to see and enjoy.

Cardiff: Not the biggest capital or city in the country, but in this case small is beautiful with everything in a layout that is amenable and definitely walkable. From the modern (Millennium Centre) to the ancient, a stunning castle, and those like me then Dr Who is never far away.

So whatever time of year you visit, every town and city has something different to offer, so grab your backpack and bag and enjoy some urban walking for a change.
