The last weekend of September and Autumn begins, but there is still plenty of opportunity to get outside, the weather forecast is a little mixed depending on what apart of the country you are in, but simply grab your waterproofs, the Lyle Packaway Jacket is ideal, and enjoy the countryside. Here are a couple ideas for events occurring this weekend and over the next few days that may tickle your fancy.

The North Pennies Walking Festival starts on the 27th September and runs until the 5th October. This year there is an ambitious programme of walks and events for you to choose from and there is something for all the family. Saturday sees the ‘Little Legs, Big Fun Family Walk’ which starts at Wolsingham station and takes you over a distance of 4.5 miles while you create a ‘memory stick’ from scavenging along  the walk, learn how to read a map, listen for sounds, have a quiz on the landscape and even learn how to skim stones. There is even a break for lunch where there is a chance to do a wordsearch and play Frisbee. For those who fancy something a little more challenging then Sunday’s walk may be more up your street when thee ‘Three Counties and Killhope Cross’ walk takes place. From Nenthead you will walk to Black Hill before ascending to the three counties cairn before the gradual descent to Killhope Cross, then more exposed peatland on the return via Knoutberry.

A lot further south sees the Sidmouth Walking Festival begin this weekend and run until the 2nd October. This is a first for Sidmouth  and its location on the Jurassic Coast offers some wonderful scenic walking. The town has achieved the ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status and is keen to promote the walking opportunities in the area. There will be two lengths of walk each day and will be led by experienced local volunteers. For those feeling the need to undertake something a little less strenuous then they are also offering guided walks around the town itself and the local Arboretum Trail will be made available.

For those of you who enjoy cycling why not try the ‘Rolling by the River’ ride in York. This starts on Saturday at 10.00am from the bottom of Marygate, next to the St John Boat House. The plan is to head out towards Skelton, taking in part of the ‘Way of the Roses cycle route’, giving you views of the River Ouse, Clifton Park and Rawcliffe Bar Country Park.

Me, well I will be staying close to home this weekend with a walk around Macclesfield on Sunday so I can make sure of my monthly fix of cupcakes from the local Treacle Market. Might even treat myself to something extra, I think I’ve earnt it. Enjoy the weekend whatever the weather.
