After the traditional New Year’s Eve events what better way to clear the head and get those legs working with a walk on day one of 2013. Here are some last minute ideas across the UK.

1. The National Memorial Arboretum – a brisk 2 mile guided work around the Arboretum, perfect for all the family. Various times between 11am and 3pm, but booking is required. Contact the Arboretum on 01283 792 333 for further details.

2. The RSPB Titchwell Marsh nature centre (Norfolk) – again starting at 11am, a tour around the nature reserve taking a look at the available wildlife. Again booking is required, contact details on the RSPB website. This will also give details of other events nationally

3. The London Wetland Centre. Even in the big city it’s possible to find an area to walk and admire some wildlife, they offer introductory bird watching days too.

4. Haslingfield Village. A free event for members of the community to meet and start the New Year with a morning walk and after soup and sandwiches (small charge) an extended walk is on offer for the more ambitious. Check out the village website.

5. Strutt’s North Mill. This Peak District site is offering a family walk for the New Year, a nice afternoon stroll for all the family. Check the website for more details.

These are just five events around the country, remember to check out The National Trust, Forestry Commission and local websites for walks in your area. Always remember to wrap up warm and be prepared.
