According to figures released by Walking for Health, run by Macmillan Cancer Support and the Ramblers Association, patients who have been diagnosed with two of the most common forms of cancer (prostate and breast) could improve their chances of success in beating the disease by walking just a mile every day.

By undertaking a moderately paced walk and completing a mile in around twenty minutes cancer patients could improve their survival rate by 30%, for prostate sufferers, and by as much as 40% for breast cancer. The research shows the positive impact walking can have, with bowel cancer patients showing that walking for just less than an hour a day could improve their success rate by as much as 50%.

The use of physical activity in the time after cancer treatment has also been shown to have a great effect on reducing the impact of some of the side effects that patients can suffer, such as swelling of the arm, depression, fatigue and weight changes.

The use of short walks are a great way to build confidence and fitness and the Ramblers have assisted this in setting up a range of walks across the country that offer individuals and groups the opportunity to get out and about the green spaces around them. All of the walks are led by local friendly people, with the appropriate knowledge and specialist training.

So why not take this opportunity to get that little bit more active, treat yourself to a fleece, such as our best selling Regatta Thor Fleece Jacket, just to keep the chills away as temperatures begin to drop as summer begins to end so you can keep warm and stay active for a little longer.
