Attending the gym can be a daunting challenge when you first begin, where getting started is often the hardest challenge. Here are some top tips to make sure that you make the most of your time at the gym!

Get into a routine

Ensuring that you visit the gym consistently is very important, as erratic visits doing various activities will likely not produce the results that you’re looking for. Whether you go once or twice a week, or every day – picking times and planning out the workout that you’re going to do will help to produce results. Keep at it and stick to your plan and you’ll soon feel the benefit. Once you get into the routine, it’ll feel odd when you don’t go!

Plan your workouts

When you enter the doors into the iron paradise, you need to be focused and know exactly what you’re there to achieve. Unorganised visits, shuffling randomly from one machine to another, are disjointed and less beneficial than planned ones. If you’re unsure as for what to do, contact a personal trainer who will be able to help you.

Set short-term targets

One of the things that should be remembered is that different people go to the gym for different reasons. Some people want to lose weight, others may want to gain it – whilst some are training for an event, such as a marathon.

We all have our own motivation and we all have our own goals. Setting realistic, short-term targets can be a useful way to keep yourself motivated and pushing for improvement. We are all chasing long-term goals, but focusing on these can affect motivation if we do not improve as fast as anticipated.

If you can currently run for 20 minutes on a treadmill, aim first for 30 minutes, then 40 – as opposed to thinking: “I need to be able to run for 2 hours non-stop”. Progress doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a slow and steady process which remaining motivated and being consistent will eventually bring.
