Looking after your feet whilst backpacking is one of the most important things to remember, here’s what you can do to help!

Backpacking

Walking with something trapped inside your walking shoes or boots can be a massive nuisance at the best of times, but especially when you’re walking long distances. Taking a break to empty your footwear of any loose bits of terrain such as tiny stones can be a relief and make your walk a lot more comfy.

Long distance walks can involve rain, puddles or other things that could potentially cause you to get wet feet – especially if your footwear items are not waterproof. Unless you’re setting up camp for the night, you’re not likely to have enough time for your shoes (or socks) to dry, which means that taking them off your feet and leaving them exposed are the best way for them to dry.

Removing your footwear items can also hint at an extended break if you’re travelling within a group, however large it may be. Not only will it give you the opportunity to get some air to your boots and your own feet, it will also allow you to rest your feet which have likely been heavily worked for large periods throughout the day.

Blisters are particularly common for long distance walkers as moisture can build up inside the shoe, which leads to damp skin. Both this and incorrectly sized footwear which rub are two of the primary causes of blisters.
