When we’re enjoying an outdoor adventure with our dogs, we need to keep an eye on our four-legged friends for any of the following signs. Some are more obvious than others, but never assume that your dog will definitely be able to cope with the distance.

Dog (2)

If your dog is struggling to keep up with yourself or your group, then the most likely cause of this is that your dog is very tired, too tired to keep up with the pace set. At this point, it’s not advisable to keep going, you should at least take a lengthy break and see how your dog copes afterwards. One cause of your dog being slow is that it’s carrying an injury. There are a wide range of things that this may have been caused by, obvious signs could be a limp but things such as heat stroke are more difficult to spot.

When dogs get tired, they pant. This much is common knowledge but panting excessively usually means that something isn’t right. This often means that your dog is dehydrated so providing him/her with plenty of extra drinking water is a must. If your dog continues to pant or breathe heavily even after a lengthy break, an extended break for the rest of the day is needed.

If you have taken a lengthy break and done all you can to aid your dog and it’s still not enough, you need to stop immediately. If you follow these steps, you will slowly progress and learn the limits of your dog. Abide to these and both you and your canine friend will enjoy many more adventures in the future.
