How many of you find it extremely difficult to prepare a shopping list? Well, I am one of the many who finds the task of shopping quite daunting. The need to have the correct idea of all the things that I might require always gives me jitters. If you too suffer from a similar issue- of the fear of what to shop for and what not to, then reading this blog might just be the right thing to do.

Last winter turned out unexpectedly fun for me as I had planned a family vacation in the Alps. With several snow adventures, like skiing, snowboarding, sledging etc., I had the best time of my life. However, the prerequisite of this trip was bad experience gone right. The normal notion attached with skiing is that this sport involves a lot of expenditure, owing to all the gear and ski jackets one has to purchase. No need to fret as investing heavily on ski gear is a thing of passé. Yes, you heard it right, equipping yourself with quality clothing and ski accessories can be a child’s play. A professional skier friend once recommended me the must-have list for every beginner. Let us take a look at it:

Rucksack

Backpacks that feature straps across the chest and waist can be a major factor in cutting down all your unnecessary expenses on your skiing trip. Stuff your extra layers, bottles, chocolate bars, sandwiches for a quick bite and save yourself from spending on lavish lunches.

Ski Gear

Unlike any non-informed skier, you don’t really need to buy additional clothing or ski gear. It is always better to borrow ski gear from friends and family. It is equally convenient and helpful to lend it if you have one. Buying a new one would mean wasting a lot of money. There are several rental companies that offer jackets, pants, etc., at a low cost. One can even check out the plethora of discount stores and special ski shops, where all ski clothing is readily available.

The base layers or thermals as they are mostly known are essential when you are skiing on top of snowy mountains. This keeps you warm and dry during intense skiing sessions.

A mid layer too is important, especially during December to March period. Otherwise, this can be avoided and you can choose any normal mid layer of your choice.

The neck warmer too is optional. You can substitute with a warm scarf. However, the only advantage of neck warmers, is that they will stay intact, in shape unlike your scarf. You can even choose to wear a balaclava if you have plans to ski in extreme cold conditions.

Ski Accessories-Gloves, Mittens, Socks, Sunscreen

My personal choice when it comes to covering hands is mittens. Opting for waterproof gloves and mittens is what you need to do if it is your first experience as a skier. Keeping your hands warm is what you want to enjoy skiing. This doesn’t include, and over the top spending.

Along with hands, taking care of your feet in cold weather is equally important. Avoid frozen feet by stocking extra pair of warm socks that are to be worn under your ski boots. These not only keep your feet warm, but also provide cushion like comfort. If you already own calf-length socks without seams, then you can save on a little more of the cash.

Carrying a sunscreen cannot and should not be missed by any chance. Even though you choose winters for this ski sport adventure, sun at higher altitudes can be harsh and skin damaging. Buying it before you reach your destination is advisable as you wouldn’t want to splurge a huge amount on buying just a tube of cream. Yes, this might be expensive up in the hills.

Equipment and Ski Boots

Hiring skis and poles for your first skiing session is the right thing to do. There are innumerable rental stores that provide you with this facility. Knowing if you really have a thing for skiing is essential before investing majorly on such expensive equipment.

All about Helmets and a little Swag

Skiing brings with it a lot of uncalled fatal injuries. Head injuries are the most common in this particular sport. To be cautious, especially if you are a beginner is mandatory. Adorning a helmet can not only save you from head injuries but can be help you deliver better on the snowy fields and slopes. You can either buy them or even hire them on rental basis.

Putting on goggles during skiing is the best thing to do. Not only does it strike a stylish statement, but this also helps in skiing even when it is really windy or even snowing. Try them out before you borrow them. Buy one according to your fit. There is no need to spend a lot on this. This can come within a range of £20-30.

Insurance

Winter sports insurance is a tricky issue. Most tour operators charge a hefty price for getting this insurance done. However, it is necessary that you have one before leaving home. Checking out for specialist brokers is recommended.

Borrowing Ski Kit

Borrowing a ski kit is the ideal thing to do. When hiring is an option, then buying new and expensive stuff is a foolish thing to do. If you are not an expert or a skiing professional, borrowing is what you should deal engage in as it will surely fall in your budget.

Have a good time with family and friends with fuss-free equipment. Enjoy your first ever ski sport adventure this season without burning a hole in your pocket. This trip will surely be a one of a kind experience for you. Enjoy skiing to the hilt!
