Running is an activity which can be performed in many clothing styles, but to help you reach your maximum potential – there are certain items which you should definitely consider!

When you’re running, you will of course be putting a lot of pressure on your feet. Your running shoes or trainers need to be comfortable & suited to your running style – something which can be tough to discover until you’ve actually used them for yourself. Bear in mind that it might take a couple of uses for your running shoes to reach their maximum comfort.

Bear this in mind if you’re buying a new pair of trainers for a specific race, as you don’t want your brand new pair of trainers to rub causing you to get blisters – as that will definitely affect your performance.

In terms of clothing items, different clothing items are needed depending on the time of year and hence the weather and temperature.

One thing that will likely always stay the same no matter what conditions you are running in is that you will sweat. For this, items that have wicking features will be ideal – as they pull the sweat away from your body to keep you dry and comfortable. Wristbands and headbands can also be worn to wick away any unwanted moisture!

When it’s raining, some will want to keep as dry as possible and this can be aided by a waterproof jacket. This jacket will definitely need to be lightweight and even then, many people still prefer to run without one as wearing an extra layer – when you’d be hot and sweaty even without one – is not worth it for many people.

If it’s chilly outside, resist the urge to pull on an extra layer. While it may be cold when you first start, once you get going you will almost certainly warm up – and that extra layer might cause you to overheat.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t bring a waterproof jacket or a warm sweatshirt if it is wet/cold anyway, as you will likely want to wear them after the race!

When you’re running during the dark mornings or evenings, wearing a reflective bib is very important, as it will help to illuminate you so that drivers, cyclists, walkers or fellow runners can see you from a distance. A head torch is an alternative which could be used instead of or as well as any reflective clothing.

Of course, any headwear such as headbands, beanies or caps protect your head from the elements, but can also help to keep your hair away from your face – a big distraction when you’re running!
