Kids outdoor clothing has come a long way since my childhood, if we were going out it was sandals in the summer and your old shoes in the winter, a pair of wellingtons if the weather was rainy and that was about it, and a shout of be back at teatime it was through the door and gone. Today as it has always been it seems children always enjoy exploring what is around them and if it involves splashing and getting dirty at the same time, then all the better. However, we can offer a lot more in the way of clothing to make sure they stay dry and comfortable while they are outdoors. Here are a few things to consider when making that choice.

In order for them to enjoy and get the most out of their experience then we need to prepare them for what the elements can throw at them. Let’s be practical, it makes no sense (apart from maybe a bit of peace and quiet) to chose the latest trendy brand that the latest boy band are wearing as it is more than likely that these sort of clothes won’t give sufficient protection. The styles and designs of modern kit is so varied these days that even the most fashion conscious of children should find something they consider ‘cool’.

The most essential items to have are a good jacket and waterproof trousers. Make sure that they fit properly and utilise the latest fabrics so that they are still lightweight enough so that you can move easily. For younger children it may be as well to consider looking for pull-ups instead of those with zips and buttons to save time putting them on. In warmer weather a fleece may be all that is required rather than a full jacket, but you may need to consider a pack away waterproof of some kind, just in case the weather changes. For the jacket option, make sure that the fabrics allow for a level of windproofing as well as waterproofing

Footwear is another important consideration, trainers may be sufficient, but if you are planning any extended walks, especially if taking older children up into the hills then boots or walking shoes should be worn.

For all kids outdoor clothing the materials should be as durable and comfortable as possible so that they can enjoy the outdoors, and always remember to pack a small first aid kit as I remember from my childhood scraped knees and elbows are a given when exploring!
