Exposing kids to the outdoors from an early age gives you the opportunity to educate them on the best ways to act and behave, to ensure that the locations that you’re visiting remain in great condition for future generations.

Plan ahead

Whenever you’re going away, even if it’s just for a day – you need to plan ahead. If you’re going somewhere new, you need to know where to go, where the best areas are, where you can eat and more. But even if you’re going to a place you’ve been many times before, it’s still advisable that you check all of the latest rules.

Discuss these with your children, help them to understand what they can and cannot do before you go, in order to avoid any rule breaking.

Don’t litter

When you’re going camping, many people will be in existing campsites. But if you’re in a more remote area, you and your kids need to know if there are any nearby campsites that may have been previously occupied.

As part of your planning, you should know whether or not there are places that you can dispose of litter at, and if not, spare rucksacks and bags should have been brought. You need to dispose of any and all waste appropriately and effectively – do not litter.

Respect wildlife

You may come across wildlife during your trip, something which your kids need to be made aware of beforehand. Children are likely to want to get as close as they can to a wild animal, perhaps even tempting it with food. How the animal reacts cannot be predicted so it’s important that this does not happen, instead opt to stay away and take photographs.

Be considerate

Whilst you and your kids are enjoying the outdoors, there will be other people in the proximity too. Everyone is entitled to their own privacy and you need to be considerate of that. For example, do not allow children to run up to and around the camps of others as well as any hikers on the trail.

The best tool that you can use to prepare your kids for outdoor adventures is to educate them and lead by example once you’re out. Follow all of the rules and hopefully your child will follow your lead and continue to do the same.
