Getting kids to abandon their iPad’s to go outside and enjoy a hike can sometimes be tough – especially if the weather conditions aren’t ideal. Here are some top tips to persuade them to willingly join you!

Hiking is a great activity for families to enjoy an adventure together and the initial teething problems will eventually be worth it.

1. Let Them Help You Plan

Making them feel involved in the planning process is a great start to spark their interest. Showing them particular trails and highlighting some of their key areas and things to look out for can pique their interest. Make it feel like their little adventure. Dictating where you’re going and what you’ll do may make them feel like they’re being forced into it, which isn’t a great start.

2. Bring A Friend

Allowing your child to invite a friend along can help more than you think. Someone to lose track of time talking to, as well as compete against and share memories with can help the day to run much smoother.

3. Take Regular Breaks

It’s key to remember that although you may be able to hike continuously for a long period of time, your kids probably won’t be able to. Sore feet will lead to moaning, which is a situation that is easily avoidable. Taking a few, short breaks will allow you all to sit down, relax and recharge – helped by a drink of water and a snack!

4. Reward Them

You’ve got them on the trail, now you just need them to complete it! Although not the ideal method to use, rewarding them can be a good form of motivation. Whether that’s with their favourite meal or with a magazine – a little something always helps.

Hopefully, your kids will begin to fall in love with the wonders of the outdoors and begin to ask you when you’re next going – success!
