As an outdoor activity Kayaking is fun but at first can challenging. The amazing thing with flat-water kayaking is that with just a few paddle strokes you will be exactly where you want to be. Like most sports it is essential to be fully trained before venturing out alone as without the proper training kayaking can be dangerous.

Kayaking: What will you will need?

Begin with investing in a Kayak and buy everything else accordingly. For instance, wider the Kayak, longer will be the paddle. Make sure you buy from a reputable brand known for producing a high quality kayak, you don’t want any leaks!

You will need  a life jacket that is approved by the Coast Guard, fits you properly, and has a whistle.

Also you may be advised to keep a basic first aid kit on you in case you run into any trouble.

Learning the basics.

Below you will see the basic strokes required when paddling a kayak.

  1. The Forward Stroke

To carry out this stroke place the blade in the water by your foot and pull it back towards your hip. Remove the blade from the water before it reaches your hip. Repeat the same for the other side and continue repeating this combination until your destination is reached.

  1. The Reverse Stroke

The reverse stroke is performed exactly the opposite of the forward stroke. Place the blade in water by your hips and push it towards your toes. Do the same for the other side to keep the kayak moving in a straight line.

  1. The Sweep Stroke 

The sweep stroke is meant for turning the kayak in a particular direction. For instance, if you keep doing forward strokes in a particular direction, the kayak starts turning in the opposite direction.
