The weekend has come round again, where has the week gone, but the weatherman is telling us it is going to be a washout. Let’s get outside anyway and if it does rain, we will have our waterproofs at the ready. But what can we get up to? Let’s find out.

For all you early birds why not try the Moth Breakfast event taking place at Masham in Yorkshire. Join a local expert to discover more about these amazing creatures and see what has been found the night before. There is even an opportunity to enjoy a (second) breakfast at the local village hall. Be aware, some of the paths used at this event are steep and can be slippery and muddy in places. Event starts at 7am and runs to around 10am.

Down in the capital the annual Farmival festival takes place this Saturday. This celebrates urban farming and takes place in Meanwhile Gardens in Westbourne Park. Workshops include a kitchen garden pharmacy and a compost Q&A, plus stalls selling food, plants and arts and crafts as well as live music. Free event starts at 1pm and finishes at 7pm.

Over in Northern Ireland at Bellaghy in Londonderry they are undertaking the orchid survey at Lough Beg. This wet grassland area is just one of a handful of sites in Northern Ireland which is home to a rare type of wild orchid known as Irish Lady’s Tresses. This beautiful scented plant derives its name from the spirals of small whitish coloured flowers which, if you use a little imagination I am told, resemble the braided hair of a beautiful maiden. So join the RSPB to explore this rich wetland to look for the orchid in full bloom.

And if these events haven’t tired you out then there is a ‘Wild Evening Out’ at Bedfords Park in Essex where from 7pm you can spend a summer evening toasting marshmallows and whittling sticks before taking part in a bat walk around the park.

If you are lucky enough to attend any of the events we mention please let us know how you enjoyed them and we will feature your pictures and tales in a future blog.
