After you have run a race, you’re probably ready to celebrate the achievement – but don’t forget that you need to look after your body by performing a couple of simple steps to aid your recovery.

1. After you’ve finished a race, the first thing that you’ll most likely want to do is to sit down and rest. You’ll be tired, so that’s not a surprise. Instead of doing that straight away, spend around 10 minutes cooling down by enjoying a light jog or a walk – this will help to rid your body of any metabolic waste such as lactic acid, and aid your recovery.

2. Once you’ve completed your light jog or walk, you’ll need to aid your muscles. Stretching is the primary way to help reduce any muscle stiffness or soreness, but should be performed in moderation – over stretching may result in injury. This amount of time also gives you the opportunity to review your performance or discuss with a friend.

3. Make sure to replenish your body with food and water as during your run, you’re likely to have perspired a lot and gone through a lot of calories. Try to eat food which are rich with either protein or carbohydrates, such as Sweet Potato.

After you have completed these steps, you’re ready to celebrate what you’ve accomplished – you deserve it!
