It goes without saying that travelling costs money. While travelling, travellers often end up exceeding the allocated budget. This is because they often make expensive mistakes. What needs to be understood here is that saving money while travelling isn’t the most important thing. What holds a much greater degree of importance is spending money systematically. The longer you stretch your trip, the higher would be the budget.
Pre-trip Planning
Whilst travelling, we often spend money without even realizing that we’re spending it. Petty expenses keep piling up. Most people have an avoidant relationship with their bank. It is advisable that you stay in touch with your bank in order to keep a track of where the money is going. Moving on, it is also advisable that you adjust your lifestyle in order to save money for an additional day of travelling.
Credit Cards Can Help Save Money
Contrary to the popular belief, credit cards can help you immensely while you travel. If you plan to go on a month-long trip, it is a great idea to take a credit card along. There are quite a few credit cards that offer rewards on travel expenses. Travellers need to understand the perks of using credit cards with rewards as these would help them save a considerable amount money, which can later be spent to fulfil other requirements.
It’s Advisable to Travel Off-season
Hotels and lodges are cheaper during the off-season. Also, travellers are likely to find hotel rooms easily during the off-season as the footfall is less.
Travelling with a Friend Would Help You Split Expenses
If you plan to spend time with yourself, you need not consider this one. But if you really want to save money, it is advisable to travel with a friend as it would help you split expenses e.g. accommodation costs when sharing a room.
Being Strategic Holds the Key While Searching for a Hotel
Planning the cost of accommodation is perhaps the most important decision you’d have to take. Don’t settle for a cheap hotel if it’s at a considerable distance from the places you want to visit during the trip. You can even call the hotel and arrange for advance bookings with the best deals. It can, at times, be different from what you see online. Finding a lodge with kitchen facilities can help you save money which might otherwise be spent on buying expensive meals.
Check Around to Find Cheap Flights
If you ask the travelling community, they’d say that the flights are cheaper if they are booked 90 days in advance (for international flights). It is advisable to opt for an economical airline. Also, please keep a check on the fee structure and ensure that you don’t end up paying a considerable sum of money to get your luggage checked.
While Travelling, Keep These Things in Mind:
Try Going Carry-on:
Flying carry-on would not only help you stretch your dollars, but time as well! This would help you save time, which might otherwise be spent on baggage checking. This would also help you reduce the possibility of losing or misplacing your bag. Just count the number of bags you’re carrying. Also, remember to buy the necessary add-ons at the airport.
Go for Picnic Meals:
Spending big bucks on eating expensive lunches makes little or no sense. Try preparing your own meals if a kitchen is accessible. You can even prepare lunches and pack them for them to be eaten later in the day. You can even buy your favourite fruits and some oatmeal and eat them for breakfast.
There’s Nothing Like Nature:
Spend as much time embracing nature as you can. Go and visit national parks if you get a chance. These parks would charge a considerable amount of fee, but the experience would be splendid. You can even go hiking and kayaking (if available). These would certainly be some of the most breathtaking experiences you’d ever come across in your life.
Choose Public Transport:
See what the locals are doing. Some places offer economical travelling alternatives.
Lastly, inquire about all the complementary stuff you’re entitled to while booking a hotel room. On quite a few occasions, people don’t get complementary stuff such as beverages and meals just because they don’t ask about it.
