With the first dustings of snow in the north, and whisperings of a cold winter across the UK, it’s time to give your family’s outdoor clothing wardrobe a revamp. As well as staying warm and dry while you're out enjoying the countryside, it's important that you have the right equipment for keeping yourself and your family safe, too.

A guide to essential family outdoor clothing

Boots made for winter walking: Rain and snow demand more robust walking boots, especially if you plan to venture far off the beaten trails. Waterproof and breathable boots are ideal. Make sure the kids have good quality boots, too because happy feet equals happy children.

Keep out the rain:  As much as we would prefer it not to rain in the UK, it does! That’s why waterproof jackets and over trousers are a must. Look at the technical details to make sure your jackets are as breathable as possible, too. Just because it’s cold outside it doesn’t mean you won’t sweat on the inside and a breathable jacket will help to let the sweat out.

Layer it on: It's better to wear several baselayers, including items such as technical t-shirts, and perhaps lighter weight fleece, than one thick layer. If you become too warm or too cool you can take off or put on another layer as required. Wick-away materials make a lot of sense if you're going to get hot and sweaty as these fabrics let the sweat out, keep the warm in and also keep the cold and damp out.

The important details: Look after your hands, feet and head with a few well-chosen accessories. Your extremities are much more likely to feel the cold, especially when it’s snowy or windy.

For your safety: Even if you’re planning a simple walk or you will be sticking to waymarked routes it’s still a good idea to take a map and compass with you, and know how to use them. If you’re walking further afield make sure you add in further safety kit including extra clothing, such as dry gloves and more baselayers, food, water, a torch or head torch, mobile phone (in a waterproof pouch or bag). Pack all this in a comfortable rucksack and don't forget to tell family or friends where you're heading to and your expected time of return.
