The weather this weekend might not be the best, but lets make the most of it and see how the Welsh nation celebrate their saint’s day by grabbing your walking clothes and getting outside. Here are some of the highlights of the weekend events.

Where else could we begin but in Cardiff where the National St David's Day Parade will cross the city, starting outside Cardiff City Hall at 12.30pm and ending in the grounds of Cardiff Castle. This non-military parade is an opportunity for those who live in Wales, regardless of age, ethnic or social background, to join a dignified and imaginative celebration of Welsh heritage and culture. Entry to the castle will be free for those who participate in the parade. Welsh bands will be playing in the castle grounds until 4pm and there will be performers and traditional music sessions to follow in taverns in the city centre.

The National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthenshire is offering free entry to all visitors wanting to celebrate this special day on Saturday. There will be a special Welsh menu in the Seasons Restaurant, Welsh food and craft activities in the Great Glasshouse, and music and dancing around the garden.

A team of cooks in Bala, North Wales, is aiming to set a world record for the biggest Welsh cake as part of the town’s celebrations. Guinness World Records has set 44lbs (20 kg) as the minimum weight required. Local business have got together to supply a paddle mixer to combine the ingredients, which are being supplied by the local Co-op store. Two large griddles are being made using steel plates to cook the five foot wide Welsh cake over charcoal. There are other events on all day in Bala, including craft stalls, face painting and a market.

For those with stamina and ready for the cold, this annual dip in Llyn Padarn lake at the foot of Snowdon is an alternative way of celebrating St David’s Day and starts at 9am on Saturday morning.

Penrhyn Castle in Gwynedd offers the opportunity to learn about the harp, Wales’s traditional instrument, and a chance to visit the Victorian kitchen to eat tasty Welsh cakes during a full day of events marking Welsh traditions

So wherever you are in Wales this weekend there is plenty to see and do, so grab your walking clothes to keep the elements at bay and enjoy what this great country has to offer as it celebrates.
