Get outside this Bank Holiday and do something different
It doesn’t seem like five minutes have passed since the last Bank Holiday and here is another one, not that I’m complaining. With the weather forecast looking mixed to say the least what is on offer across the country to keep us out of mischief but making sure we get to enjoy getting outdoors – after all there are only so many times you can watch Zulu and The Great Escape on TV.
Here in Cheshire Tatton Park offering a series of Woodland Habitats Walks, taking place over the whole weekend. This is an opportunity to join the Rangers on a gentle stroll through Dairywood Way. You will be able to discover the special habitats and the range of species that live and prosper in the area, as well as being given an idea of how the woodland surveying is done.
Done in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, the local Friends of the Civic Society have organized a series of walks which highlight the local area’s history and its natural beauty. This is the third year the walks have taken place and they vary in length so there should be something for everyone to enjoy. From a 8 ½ mile waterways walk to Sutton Courtenay with the local Ramblers, to a tour around the local Abbey. All the walks start in the Market Place
In our capital there is plenty to do. It is currently London Tree Week, which is celebrating the city’s woodlands and green spaces. A series of guided walks and cycle tours are available, and even features pop-up forests with other events running until the end of the month
On Saturday 24th May you could book a guided walk around London Fields. Following an ancient tract around Hackney, learning about this ‘common land’ of London Fields , one of the few remaining Lido’s in the capital and more about the area’s history. Over in Finsbury on Sunday there is the opportunity to explore the Gillespie Park Nature Reserve with a foraging expert and to learn all about wild food.
Meanwhile up in the Lake District the Hutton Roof Country Fair and Fell Race 2014 is taking place, so if you are feeling like being a bit more active you can register for the races on the day, with both junior and senior events. This traditional family day out also features other traditional games and sports, including the sack race and an egg and spoon event so there is something for everyone to enjoy. Situated near Kirby Lonsdale this really sounds like fun.
If you are in the more for doing something for others, then why not take part in the Morecambe Bay Hospitals Charity Cross Bay Walk. This annual fundraising walk will take you from Arnside to Kents Bay. Celebrating his 51st year as an official guide the walk will be led by the Queens Guide to the Sands, the very experienced Cedric Robinson CBE.
So plenty to chose from, and if these events aren’t near you then why not let me know what you get up to this weekend, you might even get a mention in a future blog, but remember always make sure you have the right equipment and clothing when outside, and with the British climate always pack a waterproof. Go on weather proof me wrong.
