Running has a vast range of health benefits, but you can improve your efficiency by finding and wearing the most suitable pair of running shoes for your feet.

Discover what type of foot you have

The first step to complete is to find out what type of foot you have. An easy way to do this is to wet the sole of your feet and step onto dark construction paper. From here, you will be able to see from the print which type of shape your foot is.

High Arch

If you have a foot with a high arch, then shoes that are well cushioned are definitely recommended. Other features to look out for include shock absorption and arch support. If your running shoes still do not quite fit as hoped, look into customised insoles which should help to provide additional support.

Normal Arch

Out of these three, the ‘normal’ arch is certainly the most common. For people with this type of foot, your standard running shoes should be absolutely fine – where a little cushioning or light arch support would also be beneficial. Minimalist shoes can also be worn.

Flat Arch

If your foot is very flat, you would need to avoid the cushioned and minimalist shoes recommended for people with high or normal arches. Instead, key features to look out for are increased stability with a little extra support – motion-control shoes are a good option.

Find the best size for you

After you’ve discovered your foot type and found a pair of shoes with recommend features, you need to ensure that you get the correct size. When running, your foot will expand slightly, so bear that in mind when you’re trying them on. They may fit great when you’re sat down and putting them on the first time – but this may differ when you take them out for the first time. It is recommended that you find the best, most snug fit for you and go up by around half a size – just to provide you with that little extra room.

Good running shoes need effective socks

Because you’re undertaking vigorous exercise, you will sweat. The last thing you want is for there to be a pair of damp socks inside your running shoes as that will certainly not be comfortable. Ensure that you have socks that are made from either a synthetic or merino wool blend – which means they can wick away unwanted moisture and be breathable.
