Camping done right ignites a sense of freedom and inner peace in you. However, to have the skill to be able to survive in the outdoors, away from your comfort zone can be a big challenge. It is essential to be prepared beforehand and know the risks involved in camping. Fighting the odds and to be able to sustain throughout the camping stay is possible only and only if you are well equipped.
When it comes to packing, there is always so much to pack. The trick is to know the priorities. Apart from priorities, there are a few tools that shouldn’t be left behind, especially if you are camping in the wilderness. Follow the guide to stay safe and running in the wilderness.
Knife
Camping involves cooking for yourself, keeping yourself warm, especially during cold days, surviving on basics, and executing your defensive skills to fight off unknown danger. You might have to cut, chop, slice, carve etc., as per the situation. Carrying a tool that can be used for both defence and domestic use. A must-have equipment, in every camper’s bag, this is sure to save the day for you.
Map and Compass
Camping can be strenuous and tough on you mentally. Weariness can take a toll over your reasoning faculty. This blurs your ability to remember the directions and navigate yourself through the dense forest-like locations. Hence, having a compass and a map handy can be of great advantage to you. Relying on your cell phones for directions can be risky when your phone runs out of battery. A traditional standalone magnetic compass is the best choice as per me. All you need to do is calibrate it to the north and find your way back to civilisation. However, you can further update your navigation skills by carrying a paper map.
Medical Kit
A first aid kit is a must-carry whenever and wherever you go for your outdoor adventures. Looking for a compact option that is sufficient enough to stuff the essentials is a smart move. The necessities such as bandages, burn ointment, antiseptic lotion, band-aids, and Steri-Strips should be a part of the medical kit. How much precaution you might be taking in the wood, it is never a bad idea to carry a first aid box in case any wound or cut appears. You can never know the acuteness of cuts and abrasions when you are out in the wild. Hence, never take a risk. Treat yourself first and then keep on with your camping spirit!
Match Sticks and Lanterns
Keeping a source of light with you during your camping spree is an ideal thing to do. Stack a matchbox and a portable flashlight or a lantern with you. During dark night hours, a flashlight or lantern will help in illuminating the area around. Keeping your tent well-lit is the best way to keep all the wilderness in the nature miles away from you. Always keep one or two alternatives ready with you in case emergency strikes. I remember, once I was stuck in my tent for hours, helpless, as I committed the mistake of taking just a matchbox along. It rained that day and I could not light even a single matchstick. Hence, it is advised to keep your options open.
Camp Stove and Water Purification Kit
Camping near the riverside or a poolside can be fun. Lighting a campfire might take hours before you can cook anything on it. It is not as easy as it sounds. You need to know the climatic conditions, location, also the appropriate firewood required to be successful in your attempt. Rather, opting for modern and easy ways of cooking are ideal. If you are not accustomed to old-school cooking, then it is best to switch to camp stoves. Along with a camp stove, you need to carry a water purification kit too. Waterborne diseases are quite common during camping and relying on open water bodies for drinking water is like jeopardising your health. Instead, opting for a water purifying kit can remove bacteria and offers a solution to boiling water.
Pack your bags with these basic tools before heading for an outdoor adventure. It is possible that you might require more than what has been mentioned above. Just keep in mind the campsite you wish to explore and shop appropriately for the gear and tools to make camping convenient and manageable for yourself.
