The weekend is once again here for us all to enjoy and it looks like the weatherman is going to play along, for most of the country at least, so we can get outside and enjoy the myriad of events I have found that may pique your interest.

For cycling fans in London, why not head over to Haven Green in Ealing as it is hosting ‘Street Velodrome’. This will feature King Ramps, BMX displays, cycling workshops and Fix-It sessions. On Saturday you can enjoy extreme performances, free velodrome cycling and BMX sessions for all ages. There is even an amateur competition being run on Sunday.

Up in Scotland an evening of Midsummer celebrations is taking place at Edinburgh’s Botanical Gardens. You will be able to join in an attempt to break the world record for tree hugging during the evening, as well as help to calculate the environmental benefit of a tree collection by doing some tree measuring. There will also be live music performances throughout the evening, with the Gardens remaining open until 10.30pm.

In my hometown of Macclesfield we will be enjoying the Barnaby Festival Big Weekend. Jam-packed with family friendly events, with street entertainers, outdoor theatre, creative recycling the annual treasure hunt and the ever popular Carnival Parade plus much much more.

The Liverpool to Chester Bike Ride takes place this weekend. It is expected that over 3,500 riders will be taking part this year as they raise money for the nominated charity (Claire House Children’s Hospice). This year the ride will include nearly 3 miles of its journey being completed underground, but most of the trip will take the participants through glorious Cheshire countryside

The Cliffhanger outdoor event takes place at Millhouses Park in Sheffield. The aim of the event is to inspire and involve. The tagline of ‘Climb it, Bike it, Run It, Do it’ says it all. It will feature elite competitors and professional activities such as rock climbing, orienteering, mountain biking, running and others. Visitors are able to watch incredibly talented sportsmen and women at the top off their game, and then take part themselves. The activities are aimed at people of all ages so get involved.

The Ramblers take part in their ‘Exmoor Perambulation’ this weekend. They aim to tread the boundary of the old Royal Forest of Exmoor, will be discovering areas of the National Park that are not normally accessible to the public. The 31mile circular walk dates back more than 725 years. It’s quite a challenging walk, so I hope the lucky participants have put the miles in, but the spectacular views will make it worthwhile. For those who don’t fancy completing the entire walk there is a half distance option and they are providing a barbeque at the end.

The Otley Walking Festival begins this weekend, and runs until the 29th June. This is the fourteenth year this has taken place and with a choice of over fifty walks and events there will be something you can enjoy. From short town-based walks, through themed walks and waterside walks to strenuous moorland hikes. So whatever your age and ability get involved in getting outside.

So once again a great variety of events dotted around the country this weekend, so pack that backpack and enjoy the weekend, you could still enjoy national picnic week too.
