Running can be an unappealing proposition in winter, but when dressed appropriately – it can be just as fun as running in the summer. The first, and main, mistake that many of us make is ensuring that we’re wrapped up warm before we set off. The initial chill when we first set off is never pleasant, but once you get going – your body temperature will soon rise.

Wearing that extra jumper might seem to be a good idea when you’re leaving the comfort of your home, but it won’t feel that way when you’re too warm and sweating after a short period of time. Ensuring that what you’re wearing is effective is very important, and can aid your enjoyment substantially.

1. Head

We lose a lot of heat through our heads, so ensuring that we can retain as much of that as possible is very important when the temperature plummets. Wearing a beanie certainly helps, but don’t discount headbands or a cap and headband combo – which can keep your ears warm and shield your eyes from the early morning sun. If you’re looking to protect your whole face, balaclavas are an option too!

2. Hands

Our hands can get cold quite easily, but something as simple as wearing a pair of lightweight gloves can be a great help. Of course, mittens are a great option if you’re looking for ultimate warmth, but they may be a little too warm for you whilst running. As many of us do like to run with technology these days – whether that be our smartphone, or smart watch – keep an eye out for the gloves with touch-screen compatible fingertips. These gloves will save you the hassle of having to remove your gloves to check your distance covered, which will help your hands to remain at a steady temperature throughout.

3. Top

Ensuring that our core is sufficiently covered is the most important part of dressing correctly. Combining a merino wool baselayer with an insulating midlayer can help to keep your body temperature consistent.

If it’s really cold, or perhaps the weather is unsurprisingly wet and/or windy, then adding an extra layer in the form of a lightweight, softshell, running jacket – perhaps with water or wind proof resistance too – can go a long way.

4. Legs

In comparison to the top half of our bodies, it is far less complicated to protect our legs. In the summer, a pair of shorts is enough but you may not feel the same way when the temperature drop below freezing! Adding a pair of running tights to your wardrobe – to be worn solo or with shorts – will help a lot.
