Clothing for outdoors activities in the UK can vary a great deal thanks to the varied weather we get, usually in the space of a few hours! So when you are out walking or hiking your options are limited to what you carrying with you. Therefore proper preparation will help so you have the enough kit, but aren’t weighed down like a pack mule.

So what do we have to consider, is to consider the time of year and pack appropriately so that you are protected against the elements. In summer you need to consider the following:

Sunglasses: also useful to prevent damage to the eyes and allows you to see more clearly. For those of use who have to wear glasses all the time, then reactive lenses in at least one pair of glasses is a must.

Caps/Hats: Personally I prefer a cap with a good brim, but a sunhat is a good alternative as they keep your head covered and face shaded. I always carry a spare in my bag so I can change on a really hot day to avoid sweat build-up on my forehead.

Tops/Jackets – should be lightweight, have some form of wicking quality especially on your baselayer as this can keep you dry and comfortable even when you sweat. Outer Jackets also need to have some form of waterproofing or water-resistance; well we all know all quickly the British weather can change, even in the summer.

Trousers/Shorts – With our weather trousers may still be the best option or shorts if you are feeling positive. For the best of both worlds then a pair of zip off trousers is a good choice. It’s also worth considering clothing that contains a measure of UV protection, giving you an extra bit of protection in addition to your sun cream.

Socks – might not sound like anything important, but a spare pair of socks in your bag can be a godsend if you do get your feet wet on a walk. Nothing worst than walking with wet feet!

Clothing for outdoors changes with the seasons and from day to day so remember that you should always check the local weather reports, especially the night before as your requirements can change. However, here’s to a summer of tops and shorts, rather than trousers and waterproofs.
