Camping in the rain comes with its own hazards, but it is a worthwhile activity as it lets you come face to face with nature in its purest form. You get the chance to view the greenest shade of green in its entirety which soothes the mind, body and soul. If you have been holding on to your camping plans during the wet season, wait no more. Through my years of experience in the wet and wild, I have just the right tips to turn your rainy excursion into a pleasant surprise.

Sleep Tight by Being Dry

Pack an insulating sheet in your luggage and spread it on the ground below your sleeping bag. A bivvy bag is a great option for insulation and my personal favourite. It has saved me from many sleepless nights with its perfect insulation. If you don’t have a bivvy bag, you can even use a spare sleeping bag for double protection from the irritating wetness on the ground.

Camp on Higher Ground

Always look for a higher ground while selecting your camping site. Places close to a river or a lake may look alluring but these areas are prone to flooding. You do not want to discover that your gear is wet after you wake up.

Fight Boredom with Lights

Before going to sleep, when you have some spare time on your hands, you can light up your surroundings and create a fun setup for spending your evening. Keep some LED string lights handy with you and use them to illuminate the area. The brightened surroundings will give you ample opportunities to indulge in interesting activities and have fun.

Living Room Made of Tarps

Bring along a tarp or two with you on your camping trip and use those for creating a living room like experience in the wet and wild. Use one tarp overhead for creating a roof and one on the ground for sitting. If you have some camp chairs, lay those on the ground under the tarp and you are ready to play Chinese checkers.

Food for your senses

Even the blandest things taste great when you are hungry. So, if you have sumptuous supplies on your camping trip, your experience will be amazing. Cook a pizza on the campfire or just chill with a hot cup of cocoa, the choice is yours; all I can say is bon appétit.

Oh no! It’s the hunting season

Don’t worry, I have you covered. Wear bright colours on your camping trip to avoid getting mistaken for a deer by a hunter. Leave your fashion sense at home and come armed with gaudy clothes, there is no fashion police here to check on you.

Hand warmers

Hand warmers can be a great addition to your camping supplies. These versatile warmers will help you a great deal on those wet and cold mornings by preventing loss of sensation from your toes.

Keep water bottles upside down

Water always freezes from the top of a bottle. In sub-zero temperatures, if you are worried that your water bottle will freeze and you won’t be able to drink at all in the morning. Keep the water bottles upside down and you will be able to gulp a few sips in the morning.

Rain pants for a dry experience

It is quite easy to get wet in rainy weather. Never compromise on second best, and always take with yourselves rain pants or gaiters with good water proofing to stay dry and toasty.
