When I wrote one of the blogs before Christmas I mentioned New Zealand and the walks available associated with The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and it got me thinking, where could I go walking and get that on-screen feeling in the UK. Here’s what I came up with – can you come up with any others? Let us know.

Snowdon – The Watkin Path – As you climb into the Cwm Lan Valley, you might be surprised that this doubled as the Hindu Kush region for ‘Carry On Up The Khyber’.

The Chilterns – the village of Turville features heavily in the tv series ‘The Vicar Of Dibley’, and was also the setting for some of the ‘only gay in the village’ scenes in ‘Little Britain’. For those of us of a more mature nature the village and surrounding area featured in the film ’Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’.

Glencoe – ‘Skyfall’, the latest James Bond escapade and this year’s biggest grossing film, sees the secret agent speeding through Glen Etive with his boss M, before finishing up at Dalness Lodge (owned by the Fleming family), renamed for the film obviously.

Dartmoor – These eerie rocks and desolate expenses gave us one of Sherlock Holmes’ greatest adventures in ‘The Hound of The Baskervilles’

Cheshire – As a local lad the books of Alan Garner always made walking in and around Alderley Edge that little bit more exciting; wondering if I was going to find the resting place of Arthur and his sleeping knights.

Hampshire – ‘Watership Down’: a chalk ridge on which we follow the adventures of a group of rabbits. Sandleford, featured in the book, as well as the River Enborne, Nuthanger Farm and Caesar’s Belt are all actual places and can now be walked.

Think I will be doing a lot of walking in 2013!! Better make sure my leather walking boots and waterproofs are OK and that my rucksack is fit for duty.

Any other suggestions for walks associated with books or films, let me know.
