Whatever outdoor footwear you have the onset of winter weather can cause changes to the feet, notably the muscles, tendons and ligaments tend to become tighter and can be prone to more aches and pains, but one of the most common ailments is chilblains.

These tend to happen when the skin is exposed to a cold humid temperature and then is quickly taken into a warm environment. The cold air constricts the small blood vessels that are in the skin and then they cannot react quickly enough when they react to the heat. This can mean that blood leaks into the surrounding tissue, which results in itchy, red and often swollen toes. If not treated properly this can become an ulcer or cause an infection in the foot, as the skin dries out in the heat.

They are most commonly found on the toes highest points, and on existing bunions and calluses on the feet, as these are the points where most pressure is felt. Ladies can be affected above the line of their shoes around the area of the ankle as they tend to wear thinner materials on the legs.

Those at risk are people with existing circulation problems, those who work outdoors and those who wear shoes which are too tight or constrictive. The feet should be allowed to warm up in a gradual manner so that the circulation can react to avoid any problems. Why not have a pair of socks and slippers ready waiting for you when you get inside.

The risk can be reduced by keeping your feet relatively warm at all times, but by avoiding the use of direct heat. The normal thing to do when your toes are cold is to stick them in front of the fire, or a radiator, but this can be a cause of chilblains and can make an existing condition far worse. Remember that it is the exposure to lots of heat in a sudden manner that can cause the problem originally.
