We keep reading stories about obesity and how youngsters today do nothing but drink fizzy pop, eat junk food and play computer games, well here’s one exception to the rule and he should be congratulated for it.

Daniel Smith, a nine year old lad from Glasgow entered the walking hall of fame last weekend when on Saturday 23rd February he, along with his father, climbed Stuchd an Lochan and Meall Buidhe and completed the list of Munros. Well done you!

He climbed his first Munroe at the age of six and takes the record as the youngest person from Ben Fleetwood from Cumbria who completed the task last year at the grand old age of ten. Although this was equalled by Scottish twins Cliona and Nuala McCheyne from Dunoon.

For those not in the know a Munro is a mountain in Scotland with a height of 3,000ft or more. In the revised list of 2012 there are a total of 282 so if you have a spare few days there’s a challenge for all of us, whatever our ages.

Daniel and his father are already looking planning their next trip, a little stroll up Kilimanjaro in 2015! Well it’s always nice to have a challenge waiting. Maybe they could consider the 176 Marilyns in England as a possibility. No I’m not kidding, a Marilyn is any summit over 150m.
