When your priorities have shifted from hiking, climbing, backpacking, and skiing to changing nappies and little sleep, it is not that easy to cope. It may feel like a long time since you roamed the mountains and may worry how long it will be until you feel the mountain air on your face again. Your new child is your priority but somewhere there is still a little sadness over the things you may be missing out on.

Just like you, I have been here and guess what..... It is possible to do both!

I am a father of two teenagers and as every year passes by the feeling of being a parent gets better every day. I have always taken my children backpacking, climbing, day-hiking, skiing, and paddling despite what a lot of people might think and say.

Here are some tips on how to h ave a pleasant time conducting these activities with your children.

Ignore outside judgement – A lot of fellow parents may say that your backpacking days are over. Don’t listen to this and follow your heart. These comments are always received from those who either do not go outside or are not outdoor lovers like you.

Start them early – I started taking my children backpacking from when they were a few months old and still continue to do so.  Those short walks have always meant the world to my wife and I. It has enabled our children to learn and grow with nature and allows us to go backpacking together as a family with ease.

Hike your own hike – This famous saying has a hidden message that should also be opted not only by the hikers but also those raising their children. Just like your first hiking trip, the first few days of parenting can be rocky, and you may fall down a lot of time. But all you need to do is be comfortable and do what feels right.

Listen to good advice – When hiking you are likely to come across other families with more experience than yourself. This means that they love hiking as much as you do and their children still taking part means they love it too. Talk and listen to them, they might have some great advice to give.

Accept disappointments and set backs– There may be occasions when you plan a trip and cannot make it, whether someones sick or the weather is too bad. Don't be disheartened, just rearrange.

Find other like minded parents – Join groups and find like minded people to go hiking with. This will create more opportunities for going out and having a big group to enjoy with. The children will be kept busy playing with their friends whilst you and your partner have a catch up and share your individual experience with other parents.

In the end, enjoy what you do – The most important thing is to have fun in life. Time does not stop for anyone and all you need to do is make the most of it. So, make plans with your family, and create wonderful memories.

If you are an outdoor lover and don’t want to stop exploring even when you have children you can  take them with you and fill their childhood with great adventures.
