It’s been a while since I went on my first big backpacking trip, but I still remember it like it was yesterday. Me and the four friends who accompanied me were a lot younger then, and we were far less experienced in the arts of hiking and camping. We set off on our adventure eager to see what the wilderness had to offer for us, and after spending the days and weeks leading up to our trip carefully planning for the excursion, we were sure that we had prepared ourselves for anything that could happen.

Only once we left did we collectively realise that there was one crucial thing which we had completely forgotten to bring: toilet paper. After rapidly going through the five stages of grief, we came to realise that it was now too late to do anything about it and, not wanting to postpone the trip after so much careful planning, we decided to soldier on. We were going to have to learn the hard way how to take care of our personal hygiene in the great outdoors.

What to do, if you forget to carry toilet papers on the trip?

I know you all will be amused by the situation. But, let me tell you the fact that even before the existence of toilet papers, there were human beings and they too managed to survive. There are abundant natural resources, which can be used as a substitute for the same. I know, they are not as convenient to use as toilet papers, but when you are left with no alternative they will be more than adequate.

Here is a list of a few things which we could find in the backcountry and use them as a replacements of toilet paper.

1. Snowballs

A convenient option that can be used as an alternative to toilet paper in colder weather. Make a snowball in an oval shape, which is smaller than your palm and use it. It may be a bit cold, but it will get the job done!

2. Leaves of various plants

They are a great option but you should be careful before using them. They should not be too fragile and just check that no insect prevails on them. Also, nettles are not recommended.

3. Leaves of Mullein

They are an ideal option, as they have a soft texture and are often referred as “cowboy toilet paper.”

4. Rocks

Before using them, just be careful that they do not have edgy surface or else they may hurt you! Choose a rock with a smooth texture.

5. Leaves of woolly lamb’s ear

They are as comfortable to use as leaves of mullein.

6. Sticks

Just be careful before choosing them. Sticks with a harsh surface are not advised to use.

7. Poison ivy/poison sumac/poison oak

A temporary solution that is advised to be used in the most adverse situation. The afterward result may cause itchiness.

None of the above substitutes are going to be as effective or as comfortable as toilet paper. But then, in order to achieve something you need to sacrifice a little. Well, it is a part of a true adventure that can give you a lifetime experience.
