So you have bought your UK outdoor clothing, and you are ready to explore, taking that first step into the great British countryside. Here are a couple of timely reminders that we all have to be aware of:

1. Ensure you follow the Countryside Code. This applies to all parts of the countryside in England and Wales, most of it is common sense, and it’s designed to help everyone to respect, protect and enjoy the countryside around us. It first cam together in the 1950s, and has been updated several times, the last in 2012. Check out Natural England for a full copy of the code.

2. Make sure you always gates and property as you find them. If a gate is closed when you come to it, make sure it is closed when you have gone through it. Be aware of plants and animals and do everything to protect them, especially if walking across farmland or grazing pastures, keep to the designated paths as much as possible.

3. Keep dogs under control, and always clean up after them. Be aware that some people can be quite nervous around dogs; it can be disconcerting to see a dog bounding up to you, even if it is a loveable Labrador.

4. Pack your bag correctly. Even if you are off on a short walk, relatively speaking, remember to put some sort of waterproof jacket in your pack just in case of a shower or sudden downpour.

5. Walking should be enjoyable, so don’t look at how many miles it is until you finish or how steep that next climb is going to be, focus on the positive of how far I have done or how good the view is going to be when I get to the top. On a personal note remember that walking downhill can be as tough as going up, especially if the steep or the surface is wet. Keep to a slow steady pace; making sure that each foothold is secure so that your balance can be maintained.

This is by no means meant to be exhaustive, so get your UK outdoor clothing out and let’s enjoy the great outdoors that Britain offers.
