When the weather is nice it is the perfect time to pack your bags and get out hiking.

My concern has always been to pack things as little as possible yet remember everything important. With years of learning here I am with a list of 7 must-haves for an excellent hiking experience.

  1. Boots

Rule number one for hiking is to watch your feet and take care of them. The best tip here is to invest in good quality boots that will meet your requirements and last for some years. Keep in mind that the boots you buy must be lightweight and weatherproof. You can always try out a few boots and pick the best that suits you.

  1. Rucksack

A rucksack is another important thing that you must buy keeping your comfort level in mind. It must be adjustable and should not feel heavy after walking a few miles. So you must buy a bag that will minimise the wear and tear caused due to walking. A 33 litre rucksack is sufficient and the best option for an all-day long hiking trail.

  1. Map

When you are out hiking, you must know where you are heading. There are navigation apps available on the phone, but still for out of service areas you must keep a paper map with you to prevent yourself from getting lost. You can always learn online how to read a map before leaving your house.

  1. Socks

With good boots you need a good pair of hiking socks too, that are comfortable and will keep your feet dry and airy. If you often get blisters while walking, then anti-blister socks are a blessing. A good pair of socks will also prevent smelly feet after walking for long period of time.

  1. Waterproof Jacket

Weather can always be unpredictable, but you must be ready for every circumstance that comes your way. Always keep a weatherproof coat in your bag that is breathable and comfortable. The coat must have taped seams and some space for layering it beneath with a warmer when it gets cold enough. It is wise to invest in a good quality waterproof jacket that will last for years.

  1. Walking Poles

Walking poles can be of great help in maintaining a good balance and rhythm while striding on an uneven and rough terrain. Personally, I found them very useful and would recommend for that extra support and stability.

  1. Flask

Rather than carrying single use plastic disposables, it is good to get your hands on a high quality insulated flask. The flask is multi functional and can be used for keeping the cold water cold and a cup of tea hot. A big flask is useful for carrying soups for midway refreshments when you are hiking in groups. When you are not hiking, this flask can be used in your everyday life as well.

Feel free to add things that you feel are essential other than those mentioned above.
