You have your clothing and boots but what other essential pieces of outdoors gear will you need to get you through a multi day hike. Here’s one list, see what you think.

Pack – obvious but you have to be sure that it fits properly just like the rest of your clothing. This item could make or break your trip.

Map/Compass/GPS – Unless you have a photographic memory these are vital and without them you might as well not venture outdoors.

Sleeping Bag – As this is going to keep you warm at night, this has to be  the right type for you. Try them out at home before undertaking your trip.

Sleeping Pad – If you are heading into the heights then this can make all the difference as it will separate your body from the cold earth.

Pillow – These are available in there own stuff sacks and add a little bit of comfort.

Utility Knife – Always useful on a trip, and best to make sure it packed safe but available for use.

Cooking Gear – Whether you are camping in the wilds or at a designated site your cooking equipment is what will supply you with hot food to keep your stomach full and your energy levels at maximum. Always go for the most reliable and lightweight that you can afford.

Cooking Supplies – Cutlery and mess tin, or whatever works for you

Food – Depending on where you camp, freeze dried meals or dried food is always a winner. One extra thing to consider is always to bring at least one day’s extra food on your trip, just in case of an emergency (bad weather for example).

Flashlight/Headlamp – Lightweight and could be a life saver once the sun goes down.

First Aid Kit – Whether it’s a cut finger, scraped knees or god forbid something more serious a solid first aid kit can help alleviate pain and worry until proper medical help can be reached.

Fire starter / Waterproof Matches – Waterproof, wind proof, strike anywhere matches should be a vital thing to pack. Remember to pack them separately from other any other means of fire starting and that  they are packed in a waterproof container.

Whistle - A whistle? Yes… these can be heard at very great distances in case of an emergency.  Stay away from whistles with a ball/pea inside as they can freeze up in the high country – even during the summer months.

Insect Repellent and Sunscreen – What’s worse then being buzzed and bitten by insects while trying to enjoy the great outdoors?! Well, being sunburnt can be just as miserable. Be smart and pack these!!
